Hair Through the Decades
1920s: With the new independent women of the day it was time to cut off the long, time-consuming tresses and embrace shorter androgynous hair styles
1940s: Soft curls were back, inspired by Hollywood starlets, for formal occasions. But the practical working woman needed it out of the way, thus giving rise to scarves and rolls.
1950s: As glamour came back in style hair was teased, sculpted, sprayed, and waved to create that perfect helmet appearance that could last for days.
1960s: As women moved more and more into the workplace, shorter hair with bangs became the fashionable trend. Long hair was worn up and out of the way and make-up was simple and natural.
1970s: The long, natural, free-flowing lock of hair of the 70s epitomizes the hippy phase. Natural hair was in, along with curls, soft parts, and fringe.
1980s: Glam rock emerged in the 80s; hair grew to enormous sizes and touted outrageous colors. The perm became essential and Madonna was the hair icon to watch.
1990s: Longer layers were juxtaposed by short, choppy styles. Hair was messed-up regardless of length, and blonde highlights became ubiquitous.
