Online cosmetology schools are beginning to show up more often, as the online education realm becomes more diverse. However, online cosmetology programs are currently a trend that only licensed cosmetologists can enroll in. The first thing eligible online students should consider when applying, is whether or not they want to attend an accredited school. Cosmetology schools that have been accredited have met academic and institutional requirements established by an accrediting agency. The largest accrediting agency for cosmetology schools is the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences (NACCAS). This independent accrediting commission is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, as an authoritative evaluator of postsecondary schools and departments of cosmetology arts and science, as well as specialized schools. This accrediting agency and others evaluate schools based on its curriculum, quality of education, facilities, staff and admissions policies. While not all cosmetology schools are accredited, there are plenty of reasons why you should attend an accredited school. An accredited cosmetology school gives students the opportunity to receive student financial aid for tuition and other college costs. Accredited schools abide by a minimum set of standards that demonstrate a wide range of acceptability. These schools also undergo strict reevaluation at least once every six years to ensure that the standards are continually met. From ethical and academic requirements, accredited cosmetology schools do their part to provide a well-rounded education and proper training for future work. In addition to looking for accredited schools, students should also pay close attention to the legitimacy of the accrediting agency that approved the school. If a school is accredited by an agency that is not recognized by the Department of Education, then you will want to do further research on why it’s not recognized. As stated above, not all cosmetology schools are accredited because some are too new, others do not want to be and some are under evaluation. This doesn’t necessarily mean the cosmetology school won’t be recognized by future employers, but you may incur some discrepancies in your overall education.
